A Fowlers toad hides in some vegetation along the river in Kitchener. I was on my way to photograph a bird that had a call that I'd never heard before, a crazy manic sounding thing, when this little guy jumped out from under my feet and into the bush. He was fairly close to me, closer than the minimum focusing distance of my lens, so I had to jam myself under a fallen tree to get far enough away to get a sharp image. I ended up with decaying bark down my back and a few black flies in my hair (those I found later while I was eating lunch with a group of people I'd just met.)I'd lost the bird several times in the thick woods along the river and was happy to photograph something that wasn't keen on running away. The bird turned out to be a Grey Catbird. But I wasn't able to get a decent shot of him. Next time.
