I went for a hike on some trails behind a new housing development on Edgewater Crescent. While making my way towards the Grand, I came upon several shiny pretty looking beetles. Right away I had the feeling the bug was not in its natural habitat. I had spent countless hours exploring trails and woodland as a child and many hours during this project. I had never come across these insects before.
My hunch proved right. It turns out these are Japanese beetles and an invader species. Although nice to look at they have no predators here and can cause a lot of plant damage.
I did have to admire the resourcefulness of this one. It had climbed to the end of a leaf and like some Cirque Du Soleil acrobat, it performed a high wire worthy trick. Standing on its hind legs it reached for and grabbed a smaller leaf, sat suspended for a second, then swung across to a new plant.
