Not sure what Dave Pelz, Phil Mickelson's coach, was smoking before the PGA Championship, but man, what a moron.
Even if Tiger Woods hadn't won the event.
"When Phil's at his best," Pelz told reporters, "I'm thinking nobody can beat him. I'm not saying Tiger's short game is bad. He has a great short game. But I think Phil putts more consistently than Tiger does . . . "
Yeah, so? Then why doesn't Phil win as much as Tiger does? That's the bottom line, isn't it? This has got nothing whatever to do with the rivalry or bad blood, media-perceived or otherwise, between the two golfers.
It's about who's the best, as if anyone could possibly question that. This guy, Woods, is the most dominating golfer to come along. Ever. Not even Jack Nicklaus routinely routed, not just beat, the field while winning majors. And that's not taking anything away from the Golden Bear, not by any means.
But what is going on in major tournament golf right now is akin to how Wayne Gretzky used to dominate the NHL individual scoring race. Used to be, Gretzky's assists total alone was enough for him to outpoint every pretender to his crown.
Woods is doing the same sort of thing.
It's human nature to try to find fault. We all are guilty of it. And Woods has his faults, even though he may (???!!!!!) not have all the shots. Even if that were true, it's like music. The best guitarist, drummer, bassist and vocalist in the world might not necessarily make the best rock band in the world if they can't write songs. It's the whole package that makes the band, and it's the whole package that makes the man in Tiger's case. And he sings a winning tune, in major golf tournaments, nearly every time out.
Every now and then, someone rises up, for a time, to seemingly threaten Woods' reign. It lasts about a week, usually because Woods is in the middle of his periodic process of re-tooling his swing.
Anyone seen Vijay Singh, lately, for instance? David Duval? Anyone?
The man IS golf and, rather than trying to pick apart his performances as some do, we should be enjoying the fact we are around at this period of the history of fun and games to watch him play.
Players like him, in any sport, come along only once in a while.
