Is it just me or is there something strange about the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Air Canada Centre, Hockey Night In Canada and the whole inhouse mutual admiration society therein?
Last year, the Leafs made a big to-do over no-talent goon Tie Domi playing his 1,000th NHL game, complete with lengthy (and ridiculously fawning) pre-game ceremony.
Tonight, same thing for referee Paul Devorski of Guelph for officiating his 1,000th game.
No offence, but so what? You get fawned over for showing up for your job 1,000 times? Hey, folks out there, we all want some of this, don’t we?
This is a referee we’re talking about. It was hilarious when it was announced that the Leafs and Washington Capitals, Toronto’s opponent tonight, were offering gifts.
Yeah, until Devorski makes a call they think stinks.
It’s all unintentionally hilarious and sadly parochial. Almost makes you wish the Leafs hurry up and win a Stanley Cup for the first time in 40 years so they can hold a truly meaningful celebration and dispense with this nonsense.
Which, of course, is why they engage in this nonsense. It’s a substitute for the real thing which, likely, won’t be happening anytime soon.
