Just another pro sports contract. But for whatever reason it got me thinking when I read about Detroit Red Wings' forward Pavel Datsyuk agreeing to a three-year, $22.5 million deal with the NHL team.
We see huge contracts awarded in major league team sports all the time, but the eyes tend to glaze over and one wonders whether we ever really think about how much money is being tossed around.
If you break it down annually - and this isn't even close to the biggest sports contract ever, just another, pretty much average example - Datysuk will get $7.5M a year. If it were you or me, getting paid likely as is the norm every two weeks of a 52-week year, that means $288,461.54 every two weeks.
Look at your pay cheque. Look at this one. Not going to criticize it, get into all those arguments about relative worth and doctors and so on vs. athletes because after all, the market dictates perceived value.
All I will say is, wow. Imagine.
