A pickup truck backed up to the front door of the hospital this afternoon with a special delivery. I was standing near the entrance and watched a group of men unload a body, head-first, and wrapped in a blanket.
I was horrified that a corpse would be shuttled in the front door like that, past hundreds of onlookers, when I saw something strange. One of the men carrying the body tapped its feet. And they all laughed.
Suddenly I saw the feet - they were white, not black. And attached to a cement stand. It was no body at all, but a statue of St. Joseph, a gift from the sisters in Hamilton.
The statue was supposed to be a centrepiece for yesterday's celebration at the hospital, but arrived a day late.
