Final four decided

Bluevale beat Forest Heights 14-7 in senior boys football this afternoon to move on to the semis.

Rez had no problem with Southwood, winning 38-0.

That means Bluevale takes on Sir John A. Macdonald in the semis while Rez faces Galt.

In Division B action, it was WCI 7, Elmira 0 and Cameron Heights pounded Huron Heights 52-10.

That sets up the following semis in senior - Cameron Heights vs. WCI and Jacob Hespeler vs. Glenview Park.

Vikings own top ten

Waterloo Collegiate's senior girls basketball team is capable of big things.

The girls claimed top spot in WCSSAA yesterday, defeating KCI 64-35, to finish regular season play at 12-0.

The girls seem to be peaking at a good time. They're beating some of the top teams across the province in weekend tournaments and own the local scene.

Is this the team that can go all the way? They definitely have a solid shot for a number of reasons.

The Vikings have a star in Shelby Kurt. They have depth - all nine players can, and do, play. They have dangerous shooters and a fantastic defence. Their press is amazing and execution flawless. The coaching is solid too. 

It's obvious these girls take practice seriously.

FINAL SENIOR GIRLS BASKETBALL TOP TEN:

1. WCI (-): Never lost top spot all year in the rankings.

2. KCI (-): Was right with WCI for half a game before losing yesterday.

3. St. Mary's (-): A perfect season in D8, nice.

4. SJAM (-): Worse record than Elmira, but I think they're a better team.

5. EDSS (-): Finished strong at 11-1.

6. GRCI (+3): Nobody wants to face these girls in the quarters.

7. St. David (+1): Have the talent to surprise St. Mary's in the playoffs.

8. SSS (-1): Rocky week for the Sabres. Loss to W-O hurts.

9. GCI (-3): 0-2 to close out the year, not good.

10. WODSS (NR): Defeating Southwood yesterday that gets them back in the top ten.

Honourable mention: Bluevale, Rockway, Jacob Hespeler

A busy day in WCSSAA sports.

Kudos to Forest Heigths for winning the junior boys soccer crown.

And a nod to Waterloo Collegiate's senior girls basketball squad who claimed first overall with a win over KCI.

Some football scores trickling in too. A bit of a shocker in Galt downing Preston. Well done Ghosts!

Three stars:

1. Emeka Agada, Elmira: Give him 36 points as Elmira advances in junior football. The Lancers beat Preston 56-42.

2. Javon Masters, Forest Heights: He had a pair of goals in the Trojans' 3-1 over Huron Heights in the junior boys soccer final.

3. Kevin Simpson, Galt: The Ghosts are off to the semis in senior football with their 28-22 win over Preston. Simpson had 12 points.

Heinbuch draw released

The 25th edition of the Heinbuch Classic runs Nov. 27-29.

Last year, Pickering-Ajax won the title. The club was led by Devoe Joseph, shown in the photo just before a slam dunk.

Full Heinbuch Classic draw

Moser leads Houston

Former St. David student Ben Moser (pictured) has emerged as the leader at the University of Houston.

He led the Cougars for the third straight tournament this past Tuesday, as fall golf season wrapped up down south.

Moser is just one of a bunch of local lads swatting clubs in the States.

Mike McKenzie, a St. Benedict grad, is a junior at Wofford College in South Carolina while ex-Sir John A. Macdonald student Josh Bamberger had a solid start with King College in Tennessee.

Meanwhile, Cam Burke, who used to go to Waterloo-Oxford continues to play for Eastern Michigan. Burke won the Canadian Men's Amateur Championship this past summer. And he's teammates with Jacob Hespeler grad Brad Larente.

Another from that era, Jimmy Latta out of Bluevale, is at the University of Waterloo and helped the Warriors earn a silver at this year's OUA championships.

A pretty impressive group to say the least.

Rez crowned champs

Resurrection got by rivals St. Mary's 5-3 this afternoon to claim the District 8 junior boys soccer title.

Both teams move on to the regionals Nov. 6-7 at Budd Park.

Three stars:

1. Glorian Ganza, Rez: He potted two goals to lead the Phoenix over the Eagles in the junior boys soccer final.

2. Julia Robertson, Pere Rene: Give her 22 points as the Chevalieres beat Monsignor Doyle 39-34 in junior girls basketball.

3. Clare Schellenberg, Rockway: Another big game for Rockway's star. She picked up 15 points as the Flames downed Rez 53-30 in senior girls hoops action.

Junior boys soccer finals set

For those who love the footie game.

District 8 junior boys soccer has two rivals going head-to-head in St. Mary's vs. Resurrecion. The game runs tonight at Rez at 3:30.

Over in WCSSAA it's a battle of the Heights when Forest Heights takes on Huron Heights tomorrow at Budd Park at 3 p.m.

Remember the days when KCI had a senior football team? Here's a clip of one Raider sacking the quarterback at Bluevale.

This has got to be a year or two old. Anyone recognize the players out there?

The parent issue

The recent ordeal surrounding Southwood's senior girls basketball team brings up an interesting issue.

Just what is the role of parents in high school sports? Do they have a legitimate beef if their kids aren't playing enough? Or should they leave the coaches to do their jobs?

Some parents have completely lost control. 

Just to be clear, I'm not equating the Sabres' saga to the stories listed below, because they are far, far more serious. I only offer them up as examples to illustrate some extreme cases.

Meanwhile, University of Washington psychology professor Frank L. Smoll says confrontations over playing time is one of the biggest issues between parents and coaches. He offers some tips to help coaches who find themselves in sticky situations.

Trojans to face Huskies in final

Forest Heights moves on to the junior boys soccer final after a 2-1 win over Cameron Heights this afternoon.

The Trojans will face Huron Heights, who blanked SJAM 1-0.

Three stars:

1. Sebastien Pikulski, Huron Heights: He scored the winner to send his team to the final in junior boys soccer.

2. Liz Phillips, Galt: The Ghosts beat KCI 44-41 in junior girls bball action and Phillips had 20 points.

3. Steph Hutt-Taylor, Southwood: It has been a rough day or so for the Sabres. But they beat Glenview 55-27 today and Steph poured in a dozen points.
