Sports specific
Some schools in Waterloo Region are factories for specific sports. Got me thinking, if you had to name one school and the sport they were known for, what would it be?
Basketball: WCI, KCI, St. David
Wrestling: Monsignor Doyle, St. Mary’s, Jacob Hespeler
Hockey: Grand River, Forest Heights, St. Benedict, Elmira
Football: Bluevale, Preston, Sir John A. Macdonald, Rez
Volleyball: Grand River, Forest Heights, Rockway, Woodland
Track and field: Rez, Bluevale
Field Hockey: Waterloo-Oxford, Forest Heights, Southwood
Rugby: Glenview Park, Sir John A. Macdonald, Elmira
Soccer: Eastwood, Rez, St. Mary’s, Forest Heights
Swimming: Bluevale, Rez
Cross-country: Rez, Cameron Heights, Galt
Badminton: Monsignor Doyle, Grand River, Preston
Huron Heights: Still too new but making good progress in football and soccer.

yeha you obviously dont know what your talking about bud. CIS has a huge fanbase and CFL has a HUGE fan base

candian junior highschool football is a joke? cis is an even bigger joke? honestly, look at every football player, its basically those who tried hockey and sucked, or wasnt privlaeged enough, and resort to play football, i cant beleive u ppl take it seriusly? and where do these players even go? if lucky CFL? bahaha so 20 ppl can watch them play? thats brutal, minor leagues for other sports have 10x fan base and 10x salaries in the minor leagues? i mean common growup

yes rez hasn't been around awhile and have no history as a football factory. but they are right now. this year they will probably send more players to cis than any other wcssaa school (potentially 8) and because of their elite coaching they are producing beter players than any other team in the city right now. and will continue to as long as their coaching staff remains intact.

Since you've been talking about the past, here's some history for you Josh- long before your time.
Cameron Heights played in the WCSSAA junior soccer finals 10 times from '85 to '97 and won WCSSAA titles in 86, 90, 91, 92, 94, 96 & 97. They also won the CWOSSA junior championships in 92 (the first ever CWOSSA tourney for JS) & 94.
On top of that, the senior boys were OFSAA gold medalists in 1990!

including girls for rugby should just cement wci as one of the top teams...for years wci girls won wcssaa and would make cwossaa finals... every year it was wci vs glenveiw...and except the last couple wci came out on top too

maybe throw bluevale into hockey when they beat SJAM for once? every year bluevale hypes themselves up and every year go home without a W at the battle, maybe because sjams star players only show up for big games like that? who knows either way, its a shame sjam cant produce in hockey with all the talent they have each year.

Loving the posts. All valid.
I guess the idea was when you hear a sport, say "volleyball" what is the first school that jumps into your head.
While BCI has a great hockey team, it's not the first sport that comes to mind. Same for WCI volleyball. Vikes rule at basketball, have for a long time.
Rez football may be premature, but they have won three titles in three years (Two B, One A). And the junior program was great the year before that. So that's four solid years.
Don't forget that this includes both girls and boys teams. So Glenview may seem odd for rugby, until one considers the success of the girls' squad.
Obviously it's all subjective, so keep listing your thoughts.
I also tried to show some love for every school.

I dont understand how BCI isnt included with the other hockey school, since starting 8 years ago the worst they have finished every year is in the WCSSAA semi-finals. They have one WCSSAA crowns, 2 CWOSSA titles, and a 4th place finish at OFSSA

no mention of volleyball for wci? how about 3 straight years of ofsaa (a silver and a 4th place finish too) cwossa champs... wcssaa title games left right and centre for both guys and girls...
oh and elmira and glenview over WCI, W-O or preston for rugby?

lol this was the only year we were given a shot to be a part of the elite. being are only year in the A. lol wait till next year u will c this year was no one hit wonder but a sik team for at least 2 more years ( then most of the coaches will leave) and we will be back down.

SJAM should be there for volleyball. Back to back finalists in senior and senior and junior finalists for one year. By far more competitive than Forest Heights of late.

Good catches! CHCI and HH at track for sure.

Why is Rez even listed for football? Yes they were great this year but this is their first and only year even near the top? Cameron would be a better choice only because of their consistance both in yesteryear and in present day.

How is Cameron not listed for track? Years ago BCI might have been a track power house but Cameron has won like the last five WCSSAA titles. They have been the powerhouse for the past decade. They win the overall title as well as individual and team titles as well.

preston should be under there for rugby
Posted by: preston | December 29, 2008 at 04:52 PM
Huron Heights- TRACK!
2 big championships they got. Midget boys champions-then junior boys champions, and they're relay team medelled at ofsaa last year.
