Waterloo Region football underrated
It was another pasting for Resurrection on the weekend.
The Phoenix had little trouble with Brantford champs, Brantford Collegiate Institute, winning 43-0.
The win puts the lads into the Western Bowl against Windsor's Herman Wednesday at the Rogers Centre. Kick-off is 9 a.m.
I'm told the team is not staying over Tuesday night, so that means an early ride into the Big Smoke. And by early, I'm guessing 5 or 6 a.m. That rush hour traffic can be brutal. Not sure how that is going to affect the guys as I'm sure Windsor is staying over the night before, since they're way out of town.
I'll be there with a photographer to bring back all the action.
Here's how Brantford.com saw the game and be sure to click on the great video to watch the highlights.
Brantford coach Dave Giancola calls Saturday's game a "lousy way" to end the season in the Brantford Expositor's story.
And here's a recap of the Herman-London CCH game from the Windsor Star.
LACK OF RESPECT: There has been some talk about the quality of high school football in the region in the comments section of the blog. The gist being that the area doesn't measure up to places such as London or Windsor.
Before I get a million e-mails from the fine folks in London and Windsor, let me just say that football in both those cities rocks. There is no disputing that.
But it ain't too bad here either. First of all, WCSSAA is one of the biggest football leagues in Ontario with 19 teams. Just getting out of the region is tough enough.
And, yes, CWOSSA teams haven't had as much success in the Western Bowl. But remember that the regional body has only been competing in the bowl for the past five years.
In five years of competition, 10 teams have cracked the Western Bowl - five from London, two from Windsor and three out of CWOSSA (Bluevale, Rez and Guelph Collegiate).
Of that group, London has clearly dominated by winning four straight titles in that span. But again, in some of those years, the London teams have played as many as two fewer games to reach the final. Doesn't sound like much, but injuries in high school football can mount pretty fast, especially late in the season when the teams are playing on frozen ground.
Waterloo Region football has made huge strides in the past five years. It's not the best, yet, but it's certainly underrated
HEINBUCH MEMORIES: On a completely unrelated note, that's a photo of Pickering's Kevin Thomas throwing down a dunk at the Heinbuch Classic this past weekend. Pickering lost to Scarborough's Mother Teresa in the final.
This photo didn't run in the paper but I thought it was a goody, so here ya go, bonus for blog readers.
