WCSSAA has introduced a new football structure for the 2013 season, a change that has led to an unfortunate casualty.
The switch to a 12-team A division -- six teams in Pool A and six teams in Pool B -- means the Jacob Hespeler Hawks and Sir John A. Macdonald Highlanders won't meet during the regular season because they aren't in the same pool.
And that's a shame because as most of you know, SJAM has won the past two WCSSAA championship games over Jacob Hespeler after losing to the Cambridge squad during the regular season. Despite being more than 30 kilometres apart, it's been the best rivalry going for the past two years.
Of course, the two could still meet in the championship game for the third straight year.
Other than that, there's nothing much to complain about with the new structure that sees Jacob Hespeler face St. Mary's, St. Benedict, Cameron Heights, Eastwood and Grand River in Division A1, while SJAM will go up against Bluevale, WCI, Elmira, Preston and Resurrection in A2.
Teams will play five regular-season games against teams in their own pool and then move on to the playoffs.
Forest Heights, Galt, Glenview Park, Huron Heights, KCI, Monsignor Doyle, Southwood and Waterloo-Oxford will compete in the B division.
The top six teams from B, which will play an unbalanced, six-game scheule schedule, will compete for the B championship
The regular season kicks off on Wednesday with Bluevale facing Rez and Glenview Park taking on KCI.
