The Cameron Heights Golden Gaels, sparked by a pair of doubles victories, captured the Central Western Ontario tennis championship on Thursday at the Northfield Racquet Club.
The Cameron Heights pair of Aliyah Alli and Field Westbroek took first in the mixed doubles competition with a win over Saugeen District’s Thomas Forsyth and Madeleine Weichel, while Kenzie Arnott and Mirabel Saiar defeated Isabel Richardson and Monica Trimble of Guelph’s Our Lady of Lourdes in the girls doubles final.
The CWOSSA victory came less than a week after Cameron Heights captured the Waterloo County championship at Northfield, snapping Waterloo Collegiate's seven-year reign in the process.
Connor Gorrie and Derek Holzscherer of WCI topped Jackson Lay and Gareth White of Guelph Centennial in the boys doubles final, Oleh Sydorczak of St. David beat Zac Faveria of Guelph’s John F. Ross in the boys singles final, and Helen He of Centennial beat Montana Crawford of John F. Ross in the girls singles final.
Centennial was second in the team standings, following by Ross and WCI. Sir John A. Macdonald and St. David were tied for fifth, while Resurrection shared seventh with Saugeen.
The Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations championship will be held June 2-4 at Toronto’s Rexall Tennis Centre.
