Here's a sad story by Guelph Mercury reporter Tony Saxon on Peter Barnsley, the former athletic coordinator for the Waterloo Region District School board who suffered serious injuries when he was struck by a car early last month.
The worst, we hope, is behind him but the 61-year-old Guelph resident faces a long road to recovery after suffering head trauma, a broken neck, broken leg, broken ribs, internal bleeding and damage to his sight in the Dec. 3 incident.
Barnsley was the District 8 athletic director until the end of the 2011 school year and was almost always on hand for championship games to hand out medals or to answer this reporter's question. He was a huge help to me during my sudden reassignment to this position in the spring of 2009 and I'll always be thankful for that.
He was also well known as a basketball and football official at various high school events, mainly in the Royal City. The above photo was taken by Mercury sports editor Rob Massey at a 2011 game.
