Here are some of last week's top performers with more (I hope) to follow.
Martin Gjoriev, Cameron Heights: The Grade 11 guard had a pair of 18-point outings as the Gaels closed out the regular-season portion of the WCSSAA senior boys basketball schedule with wins over KCI and Glenview Park. He was a member of Cameron Heights’ senior volleyball team in the fall that captured a CWOSSA championship and competed at OFSAA.
Abigale Struyk: The Grade 11 power hitter turned in a strong performance as the ninth-ranked Raiders downed eighth-ranked Grand River in a WCSSAA senior girls volleyball league playoff qualifying match. A strong defender and powerful hitter with great volleyball sense, she plays outside of school for the Predators organization. At KCI, she was a first-year starter for the Raiders rugby team that last year won a WCSSAA championship and finished second at CWOSSA.
Anna Mohr, Waterloo-Oxford: The Grade 12 forward scored a pair of goals as the Crusaders scored a 3-1 win over Elmira in WCSSAA girls hockey league play. She also scored a single in an 8-1 win over Southwood. She plays midget hockey for the Stratford Aces and is considered a team leader for the Crusaders. She also plays slo-pitch in the spring season and is an avid outdoorsperson.
Warren Edwards, Eastwood: The Grade 10 forward scored 20 points in a 60-50 win over Huron Heights and 18 in a 58-38 win over WCI as the Rebels concluded the regular-season portion of their WCSSAA junior boys basketball schedule with an 11-1 record. He plays club ball with Waterloo Wolverines and earlier this season scored 39 points against Bluevale. Described as a solid team player by his coach, he will run track for Eastwood in the spring.
Mason Cumming, St. David: The Grade 12 forward is making his second appearance on the weekly list for his 38-point outing in the Celtics’ 77-58 win over Rockway in the opening round of the District 8 senior basketball playoffs. Cumming, who plays Wildhawk Basketball in Waterloo, played middle linebacker for the Celtics squad that captured the D8 football championship.
Hayden Berger, St. David: The Grade 12 forward and team captain scored twice in a 5-3 win over Monsignor Doyle and once in an 8-6 win over Resurrection as the Celtics improved to 8-1-1in District 8 boys hockey league play. He played Jr. C lacrosse for the Wilmot Wild and field lacrosse at St. David.
Maddy Antwi, Resurrection: The Grade 12 left-side hitter turned in a strong performance as the Phoenix downed St. Benedict to finish second in the District 8 senior girls volleyball standings. She is athletic council president, plays on Resurrection's rugby team and helped coach the junior boys volleyball team in the fall..
