St. David and St. Benedict will meet in Wednesday night's District 8 volleyball final.
The St. David Celtics have been bumped by the District 8/WCSSAA wrestling championship.
The Celtics, who earned the right to host Wednesday night's D8 final with a 13-1 regular-season record and a playoff win over the St. Mary's Eagles, have been forced to play the biggest game of the season at St. Benedict because of a scheduling conflict.
The D8/WCSSAA wrestling championship is scheduled for Thursday at St. David and meet officials had previously booked the gym to set up for that event.
So the Celtics, despite a 13-1 regular-season record that included two wins over St. Benedict, must now play the final at the home of the third-place Saints (10-4 and playoff win over Resurrection).
Incorrect information appeared in Tuesday's edition of the Waterloo Region Record because no one from District 8 shared the scheduling information or changed details on their own website.
As of 11 a.m. Tuesday morning, the District 8 senior final is still listed as being played at the home of the highest remaining seed, which is St. David.
There are only seven games remaining and the WCSSAA senior boys basketball league continues to be a complete mystery.
Quarter-final playoff matchups are set for Wednesday and the championship appears to be up for grabs as up to six teams would appear to have legitimate shots at winning the championship.
The Sir John A. Macdonald Highlanders are the No. 1 seed but suffered regular-season defeats to No. 2 WCI and No. 6 Forest Heights, while squeezing past No. 3 Huron Heights by three points and No. 5 Eastwood by one point.
WCI could have clinched the No. 1 seed on the final day of the regular season but were defeated by Eastwood. The Vikings also lost to No. 4 Cameron Heights during the regular season.
Huron Heights lost to SJAM and Eastwood, while Cameron Heights was beaten by Huron Heights and Forest Heights.
Of note, fifth-place Eastwood barely made it to the quarter-finals but managed a 55-51 win over Grand River in a playoff qualifying game Monday.
