The District 8 senior girls volleyball final turned out to be a thriller as a pair of strong teams went five sets before a victor was declared.
St. David left-side hitter Marianna Sokolowski took over in the fifth set and led her team to victory over St. Benedict. Sokolowski launched several serves over the net that were too much for the Saints to handle and she also came through with a number of impressive kills.
St. Benedict's Jenna Banz was her team's top player and was strong from start to finish.
Of note, kudos to St. Benedict's senior boys basketball team that was on hand to cheer on their schoolmates until the bitter end.
Those lads, of course, will host St. David in tonight's D8 basketball final.
The best-of-three District 8 girls hockey final between St. David and Resurrection starts Tuesday at RIM Park (3 p.m.), with Game 2 set for Thursday at Moses Springer (3 p.m.). A third game, if necessary, goes Feb. 28 at RIM Park (3 p.m.).
The WCSSAA senior boys basketball semifinals will be played Friday with No. 5 Eastwood at No. 1 SJAM (3:15 p.m.) and No. 3 Huron Heights at No. 2 WCI (5:30 p.m.).
Unlike recent years, I could see any one of these teams winning the championship on Wednesday night.
Friday's junior semifinals see No. 4 WCI at No. 1 Jacob Hespeler (3:15 p.m.) and No. 3 Grand River at No. 2 Eastwood (3:15 p.m.)
