There were more great performances last week as the winter seasons come to a close. Here are eight that caught my attention.
Lauren Mage, St. Benedict: The Grade 10 student (pictured above) won the 50, 100 and 200-metre open freestyle races at the CWOSSA swimming championship in Baden. A longtime member of the Cambridge Aquajets, she traveled to Florida Sunday for 10 days of training with the Ontario Swimming Academy and will then compete at an international meet in Indianapolis. She hopes for a podium finish at the March 1-2 OFSAA championship in March.
Marley Dowling, St. David: The Grade 11 setter turned in a strong effort, consistently setting the table for the big-hitting Marianna Sokolowski, as the Celtics captured their first District 8 senior girls volleyball title with a 3-2 win over St. Benedict. A first-team all-star as a junior player, she also made the D8 all-star squad in the fall while playing for St. David’s field hockey team. She plays field hockey outside of school with Toronto-based Goa Reds.
Westley McInnis, Cameron Heights: The Grade 11 wrestler continued his unbeaten string by winning the 64-kilogram weight class at the WCSSAA wrestling championship. A member of the Waterloo Regional Matmen Wrestling Club who won bronze at the 2016 Ontario Summer Games, he will make compete at OFSAA next month with hopes of reaching the medal podium. He has previously competed in rugby and cross-country at Cameron Heights.
Kayla Gallant, Jacob Hespeler: The Grade 12 left-side player turned in a strong performance as the Hawks advanced to the WCSSAA senior girls volleyball final with a 3-0 win over the Huron Heights Huskies. The student council co-president has committed to play beach volleyball later this year at the University of Louisiana-Monroe.
Samantha McCrory, Cameron Heights: The Grade 11 forward returned from a three-week trip to Australia to lead the Gaels to a pair of wins in the WCSSAA girls hockey league. She scored the game’s only goal in a 1-0 win over Waterloo-Oxford and twice in a 7-0 playoff win over KCI. McCrory, who plays midget AA hockey in Kitchener, was in Australia on a tour with Canada’s national senior field hockey team. She plays for Cameron Heights’ field hockey team in the fall.
Kanayo Nnadi, Eastwood: The Grade 12 guard scored 17 consecutive points for the Rebels in their 53-52 loss to Sir John A. Macdonald in WCSSAA senior boys basketball league playoff action. Nnadi, who missed much of the season with an ankle injury, will lead the Rebels against Huron Heights in a CWOSSA qualifying game on Tuesday. He was a District 8 all-star last year while attending St. Mary's High School.
Cade Schaus, Elmira: The Grade 11 centre scored four goals as the Lancers advanced to the WCSSAA senior boys hockey league semifinals with a 5-3 win over WCI.
Zach Ribeiro, Resurrection: The Grade 12 forward scored twice in a 3-0 win over the St. Benedict Saints as the Phoenix advanced to the best-of-three final in the District 8 boys hockey league. Earlier in the week, he scored three times in a 7-4 playoff win over St. Benedict.
