BRANTFORD – The Barrie Baycats opened the scoring with a three-run fifth inning and added an insurance run in the eighth, defeating the defending IBL champion Brantford Red Sox 4-0 in game three of the Intercounty Baseball League championship series on Sunday night.
The potential series clinching game four is scheduled for Tuesday night at 7:45pm in Barrie at Schmidt and Shaw Stadium, with the five-time champion Red Sox in a must-win position.
The Baycats, who picked up a 4-1 win in 10 innings in game one, and edged Brantford 6-5 in game two, completely dominated the Red Sox in game three, outhitting the hosts 12-6, while also committing fewer errors (2-1).
Adam Rowe threw 109 pitches for a complete game shutout win for the Baycats, allowing just six hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
Kevin Atkinson and Ryan Spataro led the hit brigade for Barrie, each with three hits, while Atkinson drove in a run and Spataro added a run scored. Kyle DeGrace singled and doubled with an RBI, while Jason Coker had a pair of hits and came in to score. Ryan Asis singled and Jonathan Fernandez had a hit and a run scored to round out the Baycats offence.
Mike Meyers was the starter and loser for the Red Sox, allowing seven hits and three runs – two earned – issuing four walks while striking out four over five innings pitched. John Mariotti and Stefan Strecker combined to pitch the final four innings for Brantford.
Eitan Maoz, Terrell Alliman, Scott Thorman, Lee Delfino, Steve Lewis and Tyler Burnell each had a hit apiece in a losing effort for the home side.
