Record reporter Brian Caldwell and I had the good fortune to be assigned a story on ice fishing this weekend. After bundling up against a steady winter wind we made are way out to the frozen surface of Shade's Mills Conservation Area. Meeting and talking with a variety of winter anglers we found out that this lot is passionate about ice fishing and don't mind the weather that comes with it. After using an ice auger to drill through a foot of ice the lines are carefully set with a variety of techniques. Some sit in lawn chairs outside, some huddle in pop up huts or the wooden kind rented by the GRCA. They all have one thing in common. A big grin spreads across their faces when they land one. Perch, sunfish, crappie and pike are all possibilities.. most are returned to the water to live another day.
