The team's assistant coach will now add assistant general manager to his resume in a new deal that will see the Hamilton native's contract extended two years.
The signing comes five days after former assistant GM/associate coach Paul Fixter left the club to be an assistant coach with the Sudbury Wolves.
Smith joined the Rangers coaching staff in May of 2006. He filled a vacancy left by Fred Parker, who went on to coach at Carleton University.
Before taking a spot behind the bench, Smith had an extensive playing career that included stints with the Detroit/Plymouth Whalers (under Peter DeBoer and Steve Spott), St. Francis Xavier University and several minor pro teams in North America and abroad.
For the past two years, Smith, 34, has coached Team Ontario's Under-17 squad at the World Hockey Challenge. Under his guidance, the team won a bronze medal (2012) and placed sixth. (2013).
Assistant coach Mike McKenzie also got an extension through 2014-15.
