About Sandbox

  • This is a place for a few people who work at a newspaper in Kitchener-Waterloo to share stories and pictures that wouldn't necessarily fit in newsprint.

Think of Sandbox as an online magazine that collects extraneous journalism. If therecord.com was a DVD, we'd be the special features.

Current contributors: David Bebee, Colin Hunter, Ben Gelinas, Chris Wilson-Smith, Karlo Berkovich, Ryan Chen-Wing, Dan Belgue and Amy Fuller.

Taped interview of the Almadas' immigrant story

By Ryan Chen-Wing

I met with Gabriel Almada on Saturday. It was seven years to the day that his family arrived in Canada from Argentina (it also happened to be one of his daughters' birthdays). Their first year or so in Canada was very difficult and he told me the story.

I got to meet his whole family, which was great. The children contributed their memories and were rambunctious and playful. Of course, I like stories in general, but immigrant stories particularly because I can relate to it. Parts of my family immigrated more than once to and through several countries.

I videotaped the interview and now I am working on editing the video. We talked for a long time, so I need to package it into something that won't be unwieldy to watch.

He wrote the story on his blog Live from Waterloo last year in a series called Coming to Canada. You can wait for the movie if you want though. It shouldn't take too long.

Thank you, Ryan, for your visit. It was a very nice evening our family spent with you, on such a special day for us.

I really hope you can use the video you took that day. One thing I know: I had never spoken that much before! (and I'm not a quiet person). :-)
