Some rationalized bicycle laws
The South Carolina state assembly has signed into law a number of amendments to the laws concerning bicycles in the state.
Of chief interest is the specification that: cars must not block bicycle lanes; bicycles are not obliged to ride on the shoulders of roads; and that motor vehicles must give a minimum of five feet clearance before passing a bicycle.
Other interesting bits include the provision that anyone who taunts, throws objects or otherwise harasses a cyclist can face a fine of $250, 30 days in jail or both; the amendment of turn signals to make legal the right-arm-straight-out option for a right-hand turn; and mandatory fines for motorists who injure cyclists.
Here's the full text with changes.
Another sign that someone is taking cycling seriously.
