Sam Cools' hopes for an Olympic medal went crashing to earth in the BMX women's final today at the Laoshan cycling centre in Beijing, when she crashed just a few seconds into the race.
The 22-year-old Cools, from Airdrie, Alta., came into the Olympics as the top North American and was ranked seventh in the world by the International Cycling Union.
