"This is Canada. It's winter. Have fun."

Well said!

Ryan

Yesterday we got quite a bit of rain here, so overnight it all froze up.
Of course today I had to go out, and the roads were pure ice.
The strong winds didn't help out either. They were so strong they kept blowing me into traffic.

Not sure why, but motorists seem to pass much closer this time of year. Not sure why they give such little room when the roads are all ice.

My favourite tip: get either BMX platforms with pins, or bearclaw pedals. This enables the use of a large sorel boots, which are far more useful in the winter than spd shoes and booties, and probably cheaper too. They're way warmer and waterproof.

With the pin pedals I feel more control than a regular platform (like my summer townies) but have the ability to put my foot down when I slide, faster than I can think to do it.

I think the bearclaw pedals might stay free of ice a bit better but I haven't run into that problem yet.

  • North America is eventually going to figure out that, for all the right reasons, we need more bicycles on our roads. Dust off your bicycle and go cycling. And if the gas-burning dinosaurs start to crowd you, it's your road and you paid for it. Take the lane for yourself.
