You would never believe the reaction from our local radio station.

The host criticized ANY cyclist who would go out in those "conditions", which weren't the best, however far from bad.

Others started the "license cyclists" rant.

Then there was the "we need more of this to help weed out the stupid people who ride bikes".

Niagara's anti-cycling community was out in full force.

What is it with the "blame the victim" mentality? So frustrating.

I agree. But it is the same attitude that some had toward the woman that was killed in her wheelchair on Victoria Street in Kitchener. I drive a car, I pay taxes and I have the RIGHT to the road. You, on the other hand, are poor or do weird things (like ride a bike when normal people drive everywhere) and if you wind up under my wheels so be it.

We all pay taxes and we all have rights. Somewhere along the line the majority of motorists gave themselves more rights than any other road user. Motorists have forgotten that driving a motorized vehicle on our roads is a privilege, not a right. The only way I can see to change that motorist mindset is through proper education, legislation and enforcement of those laws.

  • North America is eventually going to figure out that, for all the right reasons, we need more bicycles on our roads. Dust off your bicycle and go cycling. And if the gas-burning dinosaurs start to crowd you, it's your road and you paid for it. Take the lane for yourself.
