He also opposes walking on the streets. How can laws like that be sensible?

If only he was not stating the majority opinion. We have become slaves to our motorized overlords, and heaven forbid humans come first. According to this gent, I should not be allowed out of my house 4 months of the year, but hey at least he would let me ride in summer, if the weather is sunny, and I can find a road without cars so that I do not interfere with their ability to travel at 1.5-2x the speed limit around my neighborhood.

Just another typical cager

also in law enforcement

This "Opinion" column is way out of line. As a police officer who rides year round the Sgt. is grossly misinformed about winter cycling and I would like to see some one take him out for a ride in the "mild" winter weather you've been having. Instead of quoting law and force policy he uses emaotion and personal opinion. I am amazed at the bad drivers who still get behind the wheel in poor weather and then make us clean up their mess. Sgt O'Brian'S attitude is typical of many police but not all. Most of my co-workers voice concern that it's the other road users who might jeopardize my safety. Fear won't keep me off the streets and it shouldn't do the same for anyone. I exercise judgement of when I feel safe to ride and when I don't. (-20 to -25 or so is my cut off, and I keep an eye on road/trail conditions).

Very, very sad. And it is indeed the majority opinion. I wrote, and received a typical form-letter response. The whole point of that op-ed was to bemoan pedestrian deaths ... yet one surefire way to make the roads safer is to get more cars off the road by encouraging active commuting. Sigh.

  • North America is eventually going to figure out that, for all the right reasons, we need more bicycles on our roads. Dust off your bicycle and go cycling. And if the gas-burning dinosaurs start to crowd you, it's your road and you paid for it. Take the lane for yourself.
