Change 'em. I've been riding my road bike to work for over a month now. I think you'll be fine with slicks.

There was snow in the forecast for points east of here last night...

You can ride in moderately snowy conditions with slicks without too much of an issue if you're a reasonably good bike handler and you're careful...I have been riding the city streets since early February on 700x23c slicks without issue...Besides, The Weather Network says we're not going to get snow here for the next two weeks, so we can be pretty sure winter 2009/2010 is behind us...

In springtime, I try and use the previous year's slicks until after the May long weekend before mounting new ones due to accumulated road debris on the sides of the road from winter which can cut even the toughest tires' casings...

I've done a lot more km's than usual for this time of year due to our early spring and have had to mount new slicks a month and a half early because my old tires were too worn...Not that I'm complaining...A couple of extra tires is a small price to pay for being able to get out and ride so much earlier than normal...

What I'm getting at is: mount those slicks...You'll ride further and faster and there's nothing wrong with that!

It's always a relief when I can put my summer rubber back on. Actually, I do have a spare wheel, I just swap them. The difference in speed is amazing, and it feels GREAT after pushing studded tires for a few months.

So yes, put your slicks on. It'll be fine. I promise. ;)

I've been on slicks since the end of February when the sidewalls wore off my winter tires and I had two blow-outs. I'm going to keep an extra wheelset around next winter for extent dry-days so I can switch back and forth.

  • North America is eventually going to figure out that, for all the right reasons, we need more bicycles on our roads. Dust off your bicycle and go cycling. And if the gas-burning dinosaurs start to crowd you, it's your road and you paid for it. Take the lane for yourself.
