Very cool. My only concern is that the paint would be slippery in wet weather.

Yeah, these are all over England, I loved them when I lived in the UK.

I don't know, man... I worry that those boxes are dangerous when cyclists overtake on the right and try to get into them when the light is about to change to green. I can see cars racing to get into and through the box before the cyclist can take it...

I've never understood the point the bike boxes.
Wouldn't banning right turns on red be cheaper?

Cyclists also need to be aware if they are going to pass cars at intersections.

I'm so used to right turns on red lights that jurisdictions where that is not legal surprise me. I like bikes boxes particularly because of the prominence they give bicycles: it's a real message to the community that bicycles ARE a part of the road landscape. But it is likely that those cyclists who already do not pay any attention whatsoever to the rules of the road will ignore bike boxes as well.

Bike boxes are also used for "Copenhagen left turns" - instead of trying to navigate to the left turn lane, you enter and wait for the green in the bike box on the cross street.

We have a few bike boxes in Vancouver. They make the most sense for left turning cyclists. Instead of trying to cross several lanes of traffic to make a left turn, you proceed through the intersection into the perpendicular bike box and wait for the green light going in the other direction.

I suppose the left turn idea makes sense in some cases. I have seen (pictures & videos) how some of Victoria's are, and they look well done for left turns, however in the picture above you still have to cross two lanes of through traffic.

  • North America is eventually going to figure out that, for all the right reasons, we need more bicycles on our roads. Dust off your bicycle and go cycling. And if the gas-burning dinosaurs start to crowd you, it's your road and you paid for it. Take the lane for yourself.
