Unhappy With Police Effort

On around April 2009 I was cycling down the bike lane down Caroline Street when a delivery truck cut right across me, heading into the Valu Mart delivery bay. This completely destroyed my front wheel and I was very lucky that I wasn't injured. I got the registration number of the truck and had two witnesses; I went straight to the police to report the incident.

In the months that followed I attempted at least once to follow up and find out if anything had come of this incident. I thought at the least the driver should bear some responsibility for the damage to my bike. I think I am correct in saying that I was told that the incident wouldn't be dealt with by their collision division as the damage to my bike was under some benchmark figure ($1000 or so, something like that).
Other than this I heard nothing from the police. I thought that this was extremely poor.

The report reveals that 89 pedestrians crossing lawfully in pedestrian crossings, with a "WALK" signal, were struck by incompetent motorists.
There is one easy remedy ... turn signals red in all directions, with no right turn on red, and provide a pedestrian "scramble" (anywhere to anywhere) crossing as in NY and Toronto.
If motorists can't get it right, then remove their ability to get it wrong.

@ Unhappy With Police Effort. You need to look into this and get closure. Police are there to serve and protect so put your tax dollar to work. Please let us know the outcome.

Love your idea Alan, specially this statement "remove their ability to get it wrong".

@Alan, I agree especially at intersections with heavy pedestrian traffic. I nominate Erb and Caroline and Erb and King as places to start. The right hand turn lane from Caroline North to Erb westbound is especially vile for pedestrians or cyclist getting on or off the trail.

  • North America is eventually going to figure out that, for all the right reasons, we need more bicycles on our roads. Dust off your bicycle and go cycling. And if the gas-burning dinosaurs start to crowd you, it's your road and you paid for it. Take the lane for yourself.
