I met this group on the Iron Horse trail going the other way. I have to say that when you meet riders that follow the rules and have some sort of courtesy, things work out great. As a fellow rider, I find that problems occur from both riders and vehicle operators when common sense is not used and the attitude of "I own the road" is held.

Take the Lane! That's the key to staying safe! Always has been.

Nice article, too bad you had to spoil it by mentioning Brauns.

Nice post--now I know the identity of the posse that ran me right off the Iron Horse trail this morning, between Borden and Kent.

To be fair, it was a single inattentive rider near the back of the first bunch that forced me off the trail onto the grass.

Bill

@Jeff. Every group has that one inattentive rider. That's why it's safer in a group.

Bill

@Steven. Sorry you feel that way. Just for the record, Braun's no longer sponsors the Easy Riders. They still were the jerseys because, well, same reason anyone wears a jersey: cuz you've got it. I understand they are phasing in similar yellow and black Ts, likely because of the hi-viz of yellow.

Compared to a normal, signalled intersection, these traffic circles are inherently hazardous to those on four wheels, two wheels, or shank's pony.
It's unfortunate that it will take several flattened cyclists and pedestrians before anyone on County Council will admit that.

Jim - I don't think the Region's roundabouts are particularly good for pedestrians or cyclists. But the data is pretty conclusive that in Waterloo Region they reduce injuries from car collisions by 50-70%.

Take the lane yes, but in the pictures I don't see any rider signalling their intention.

  • North America is eventually going to figure out that, for all the right reasons, we need more bicycles on our roads. Dust off your bicycle and go cycling. And if the gas-burning dinosaurs start to crowd you, it's your road and you paid for it. Take the lane for yourself.
