The Macleans report is hogwash. I don't believe any of the stats quoted in it. For example, the percentages of road deaths total 88.4. That means that 11.6% of road deaths were not drivers, car passengers, pedestrians or cyclists. Sunbathers, maybe. Anyway it appears to be 6 times as dangerous for whoever-they-are as for the cyclists.

Generally, cycling is fairly safe. The average cyclist is several times more likely to be killed in a car than on his bike.

Why is there this urge to exaggerate the risks of cycling?

I agree with you Evan. Most motorists are not looking out for you. Just look out for yourself and you will be fine.

Surprise claim: Pedestrians would benefit more from helmets than do cyclists.

Not surprising claim: Fear makes people buy things.

  • North America is eventually going to figure out that, for all the right reasons, we need more bicycles on our roads. Dust off your bicycle and go cycling. And if the gas-burning dinosaurs start to crowd you, it's your road and you paid for it. Take the lane for yourself.
